Crowd-sourcing our way to a better world...

And as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't just go for the students. If we all continue to act like lemmings, we will all together go over the cliff like lemmings.

The existing power structures are not sorting out the problems. Why? Because their first priority is still the perpetuation of the power structure rather than the well-being of the people and the planet.

Political parties seem more concerned with dominance by their party and continued corporate campaign contributions than helping us out of our messes.

Within corporations, as well meaning as some people may be, the pressures of keeping the shareholders happy come before improving the lot of human contend so, working within the power structures, while necessary, has its limitations.

How do we the people take charge? How do we not take our obedient places in society? How do we not just be cogs?

It's not that I know the answer. We all need to think about this. We need to crowd-source it.

But one thought. What if we gathered in our homes in groups of ten and talked about how each of us as groups could begin to improve the lot of humans and the planet?

What if we just tried that?

It would be a start.

We will be working together to create action around the common theme: What we will do to support successful student transitions in 2010-11?

I realize memo 129 asked you to bring defined members of your student success team. What I've heard from you is that those folks are needed on site. Saying that, I encourage you all to bring the people, the resources and mindset you need there - as we allow the right topics and requisite conversations to move us toward our goal:

To enhance each Family of Schools and overall Board transition activitity calendars for 2010-11.

There will be intermediate teachers in attendance. Additional intermediate teachers from your family of schools - or anyone else you feel will add to the collaboration - are welcome.

I’m putting together the rough chapters of a book matching my experiences of startups with those of education. What’s fascinating is that most start out in that tech push model, thinking they can change the consumer or user into doing things THEIR way. When they turn the telescope around and start looking at the pulls from the market to which their tech is an answer it’s an epiphany.
However, there’s a great resistance to changing education towards what the kids would like it to be – somehow we, the push-meisters, know better and young people will have to change their behaviour to suit. And the education institution believes this is 100% the right way, the way things should be.

COLLINGWOOD, ONT.— Smaller class sizes are “ludicrous” and a waste of money, according to best selling author Malcolm Gladwell.

"Everything the world has learned about education shows that the quality of the teacher is the most important factor in a student's success", Gladwell said. “I know that from time to time there is a lot of interest in the power and importance of reducing class size but the data shows class size is the biggest dead end in the world". .
“Even if you were to cut every class in Ontario in half, you'd improve the performance of Ontario's schoolchildren by about 5 percentile points,” Gladwell said. But changing teacher quality has a “massive impact” on student outcome, he said. “If a child is unlucky enough to have a bad teacher three years in a row they will fall three years behind a child lucky enough to have a good teacher three years in a row.” The question is how do you improve the quality of teachers, Gladwell said. Raising academic requirements isn't the simple answer. Teaching is complicated in this modern world, he said. “We are asking them to play six, seven, eight different roles in the classroom. The best thing we can do for teachers is to simply let them teach. That requires a government that is activist ... that is not afraid to try something radically new,” he said.

Tell me a story ...

Just reading Dan Pinks "A Whole New Mind" ... Love the idea that now that routine 'knowledge' can be farmed out to fast computers and left directed thinkers abroad ... so we'd better get better at what they can't do.

One of these is storytelling. Because - as Ursula LeGuin said "There have been great societies that did not use the wheel, but there have been no societies that did not tell stories.

Anyone out there had a story to tell?
